Xbox 360 e71 error is not caused by overheating damaging the graphics processor unit (GPU) or video scaler (HANA/ANA) chip. However, the problem is that nobody is 100% sure what actually causes the e71 in the first place.

It sounds like your DVD ROM went out. You can swap DVD drives for under $40. The problem is that you need to extract your DVD drive key from your old drive and then buy a new drive and flash it on to the new drive. The key from the DVD ROM must match the key on the motherboard otherwise it won’t work.
